Voices of conscience: why do some people take moral stands?

An introduction to the topics covered in the Eyal Press book: Voices of conscience: why do some people take moral stands? Why do people stand up for their principles, even when the results could lose them their jobs, or even their lives? That’s the question author Eyal Press asks in Beautiful Souls: Saying No, Breaking [...]

Astronomers have captured the first direct image of a planet being born.

Astronomers have captured the first direct image of a planet being born. Adam Kraus, of the University of Hawaii’s Institute for Astronomy, said the planet is being formed out of dust and gas circling a two-million-year-old star about 450 light years from Earth. The planet itself, based on scientific models of how planets form, [...]

Oceans of Water Found In Disk of Nearby Star

Using data from the Herschel Space Observatory, astronomers have detected for the first time cold water vapor enveloping a dusty disk around a young star. The findings suggest that this disk, which is poised to develop into a solar system, contains great quantities of water, suggesting that water-covered planets like Earth may be common in [...]

We finally have a vaccine for Malaria thanks to science. No god in sight.

For Joe Cohen, a GlaxoSmithKline research scientist who has spent 24 years trying to create the world’s first malaria vaccine, Tuesday, October 18, 2011 goes down as a fabulous day. “There were many ups and downs, and moments over the years when we thought ‘Can we do it? Should we continue? Or is it really [...]

The Day All Life on Earth Almost Ended

On August 12th, 1883, a pack of life-extinguishing comets came within a few hundred miles of slamming into the Earth, killing everything on the planet. That’s what scientists at the National Autonomous University of Mexico are saying after re-analyzing the findings of José Bonilla, a Mexican astronomer who may have unknowingly come close to witnessing the [...]

Bolshoi Simulations of the Universe

This is a visualization of the Bolshoi Simulation, an attempt to chart the evolution of the large-scale structures in the universe using the data from the cosmic background radiation. (“Bolshoi” means “great” or “grand” in Russian.) From i09: The Bolshoi supercomputers create this simulation of the large-scale structure of the universe by first examining the data [...]

    Curiosity at 'Cumberland'

NASA's Mars rover Curiosity used its front left Hazard-Avoidance Camera for this image of the rover's arm over the drilling target "Cumberland" during the 275th Martian day, or sol, of the rover's work on Mars (May 15, 2013). The rover team plans to use Curiosity's drill to collect a powdered sample from the interior of the rock for analysis by laboratory instruments inside the rover. This is the mission's second rock-drilling target. The rover drove from its position beside the first drilling target, "John Klein," to its position beside Cumberland with drives of 121 inches (308 centimeters) on Sol 273 (May 13) and 26.6 inches (67.5 centimeters) on Sol 275. Curiosity's total odometry on Mars is now 2,385 feet (727 meters). Image credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech
