Religious Experiences Shrink Part of the Brain: Scientific American

The article, “Religious factors and hippocampal atrophy in late life,” by Amy Owen and colleagues at Duke University represents an important advance in our growing understanding of the relationship between the brain and religion. The study, published March 30 in PLoS One, showed greater atrophy in the hippocampus in individuals who identify with specific religious [...]

Public prayer banned in France

Following its ban on Muslim women wearing the full-faced veil in public, a new French law came into effect on Friday that bans prayer in public spaces across the country. At a mosque too small to hold all the worshipers, a common practice among Muslims in northern Paris had been to spread out prayer mats in the surrounding streets. [...]

Federal appeals court: Saying “Jesus” during public prayer is unconstitutional

As in most counties in America, the Board of Commissioners of Forsyth County, North Carolina, begins its public meetings with an invocation. These prayers are given by local religious leaders on a first-come, first-serve basis. Given that 95 percent of local religious houses identify as Christian, it’s not surprising that many of the invocations include [...]

Christians express their love to a Muslim praying at the White House

A muslim man prays on the street. Christian idiots insult him, throw crucifices at him and tells him to go back to his country. Jesus would have been very proud. Feel the Christian love:

What Happened at Damon Fowler’s Graduation?

Damon Fowler had his graduation last night. The program listed a “Moment of Silence” as part of the festivities, but this is what actually happened: You can tell from the audience reaction that this has very little to do with a Christian sincere to “thank god” during graduation. The response is much more of a [...]

Never trust a Christian

By P.Z. Myers Bastrop High School promised to obey the law against school-led prayer at official events, although they were also petty and mean about it, and have been making life hellish for the young man who complained. Now here’s the surprise (not): in an official function called Senior Night, they announced a moment of [...]

    Opportunity's Selfie

NASA's Mars Rover Opportunity catches its own late-afternoon shadow in this dramatically lit view eastward across Endeavour Crater on Mars. The rover used the panoramic camera (Pancam) between about 4:30 and 5:00 p.m. local Mars time to record images taken through different filters and combined into this mosaic view. Most of the component images were recorded during the 2,888th Martian day, or sol, of Opportunity's work on Mars (March 9, 2012). At that time, Opportunity was spending low-solar-energy weeks of the Martian winter at the Greeley Haven outcrop on the Cape York segment of Endeavour's western rim. In order to give the mosaic a rectangular aspect, some small parts of the edges of the mosaic and sky were filled in with parts of an image acquired earlier as part of a 360-degree panorama from the same location. Opportunity has been studying the western rim of Endeavour Crater since arriving there in August 2011. This crater spans 14 miles (22 kilometers) in diameter, or about the same area as the city of Seattle. This is more than 20 times wider than Victoria Crater, the largest impact crater that Opportunity had previously examined. The interior basin of Endeavour is in the upper half of this view. The mosaic combines about a dozen images taken through Pancam filters centered on wavelengths of 753 nanometers (near infrared), 535 nanometers (green) and 432 nanometers (violet). The view is presented in false color to make some differences between materials easier to see, such as the dark sandy ripples and dunes on the crater's distant floor.
