Would any God worth the name answer the prayer of a middle class white European, to help him get the job, pass the exam, be a better person, or even help his mother get over cancer, whilst he let a million children die in Africa? — John Bremner

Gays’ Rights vs Toasters’ Rights

A great link that was shared with me that explains very well the difference between gay rights and how they won’t give us the right to marry animals, toasters or other silly and ignorant ideas. http://www.buzzfeed.com/donnad/how-gay-rights-is-nothing-like-legalizing-beastali Not exactly a religious argument, but the counter is often made by the religious.

The only parts of his face that were not covered in blood were the small streaks where his tears had fallen

Thirteen years ago, on October 6, 1998, Matthew Shepard was brutally attacked and left to die, simply because he was gay. He was found almost a full day later tied to a fence, and died in the hospital on October 12. When he was found, the only parts of his face that were not covered [...]

Gay man commits suicide after Mormon church severs afterlife ties to his children

Bryan Egnew grew up in an observant LDS family in Arizona, the fourth of ten children. After graduating high school, he attended Brigham Young University, served a proselytizing mission in France, and then married in an LDS temple. He became the father of five children. He served in his local LDS congregation. He did everything [...]

Atheists meet in secret at Brigham Young University

Once a month, at an undisclosed location in Utah County, a group of students predominantly from BYU gather to talk about agnosticism, secular humanism and other religious ideologies not accepted by the mainstream group on campus. It operates anonymously—known to its members simply as The Group—because a “disaffiliation” from The Church of Jesus Christ of [...]

Artist yanks prints from ‘liberal’ BYU bookstore

If you’re looking for a print of Jon McNaughton’s “One Nation Under God” paintings, don’t bother going to the Brigham Young University bookstore. The Provo-based artist pulled his prints from campus this week, claiming the LDS-Church owned school is catering to liberals offended by his painting, “One Nation Under God.” McNaughton said the university backed [...]

Diary of an Ex-Mormon

Hear the story of a young teenager indoctrinated into the Mormon church and culture, growing to a man who would one day reject everything he’d been taught to believe. Stan’s full story can be found in written form at: http://www.exmormon.org/whylft79.htm

    Opportunity's Selfie

NASA's Mars Rover Opportunity catches its own late-afternoon shadow in this dramatically lit view eastward across Endeavour Crater on Mars. The rover used the panoramic camera (Pancam) between about 4:30 and 5:00 p.m. local Mars time to record images taken through different filters and combined into this mosaic view. Most of the component images were recorded during the 2,888th Martian day, or sol, of Opportunity's work on Mars (March 9, 2012). At that time, Opportunity was spending low-solar-energy weeks of the Martian winter at the Greeley Haven outcrop on the Cape York segment of Endeavour's western rim. In order to give the mosaic a rectangular aspect, some small parts of the edges of the mosaic and sky were filled in with parts of an image acquired earlier as part of a 360-degree panorama from the same location. Opportunity has been studying the western rim of Endeavour Crater since arriving there in August 2011. This crater spans 14 miles (22 kilometers) in diameter, or about the same area as the city of Seattle. This is more than 20 times wider than Victoria Crater, the largest impact crater that Opportunity had previously examined. The interior basin of Endeavour is in the upper half of this view. The mosaic combines about a dozen images taken through Pancam filters centered on wavelengths of 753 nanometers (near infrared), 535 nanometers (green) and 432 nanometers (violet). The view is presented in false color to make some differences between materials easier to see, such as the dark sandy ripples and dunes on the crater's distant floor.
