Separation of Church and School

By Katharine Stewart FROM our apartment you can see the front door of our children’s public school. It’s a bright red double door made of solid wood and framed in brown-red brick. Last summer I spent a lot of time looking at that door with anticipation and excitement. We had just moved to the Upper [...]

Christian Hypocrites Pray at Bastrop High School

When can a believing Christian pray? Well, whenever they wish to. Are they happy with this? No. Christians want the state to mandate a law that forces everyone to participate in their incantations. It doesn’t matter which religion (or non-religion) you have. This is nothing new. Christians have always, and will always, in every nation [...]

Herman Cain Would Require Muslim Appointees To Take A Special Loyalty Oath

In March, formers Godfather’s Pizza CEO Herman Cain burst onto the presidential scene when hetold ThinkProgress that he “will not” appoint Muslims in his administration. Under intense pressure, Cain’s campaign walked back the candidate’s words, saying that he would appoint “any person for a position based on merit.” However, the next week, Cain hedged his retraction, telling [...]

Texas Gov. Rick Perry has invited the nation’s governors to join him in a prayer day to seek God’s guidance to deal with the problems facing America. The day for prayer and fasting is planned for Aug. 6 in Houston and is sponsored by the American Family Association, a Christian advocacy group. The organization’s website [...]

Presidential Hopefuls At Ralph Reed Event Signal Troubling Power Of Religious Right

The Religious Right has too much influence in American public life as the speaker line-up at a Ralph Reed event this week demonstrates, according to Americans United for Separation of Church and State. An array of presidential hopefuls and major congressional leaders is scheduled to appear at Reed’s “Faith & Freedom Conference and Strategy Briefing” [...]

Appeals court allows prayer at Texas graduation

A federal appeals court ruled on Friday afternoon that students may pray and mention God at Saturday night’s graduation at a high school in a San Antonio suburb, overturning a district judge’s ruling. “Texas will continue to fight for the rights of all those who wish to pray in our state,” Governor Rick Perry said [...]

17-Year-Old Challenges Michele Bachmann on Creationism Taught In Public School Science Classes

“Louisiana students can’t compete with kids across the country and around the world if we’re not being taught evolution,” said Zack Kopplin, 17. Most high school students are concerned about their grades or getting into a good college, but 17-year-old Zack Kopplin is focusing on conducting a national campaign to challenge a congresswoman on her [...]

Illinois Senate approves bill to restrict Westboro Baptist protests

The Illinois Senate passed legislation on Monday aimed at restricting members of the Westboro Baptist Church from protesting at funerals. The infamous Westboro Baptist Church pickets the funerals of military families with offensive signs such as “Thank God for Dead Soldiers” and “God Hates America.” The church believes that God is punishing the United States [...]

What Happened at Damon Fowler’s Graduation?

Damon Fowler had his graduation last night. The program listed a “Moment of Silence” as part of the festivities, but this is what actually happened: You can tell from the audience reaction that this has very little to do with a Christian sincere to “thank god” during graduation. The response is much more of a [...]

N.J. Governor Says School Boards Can Promote Creationism

If it were left up to Gov. Chris Christie, public education in New Jersey would be a free-for-all. At a town hall in Manalapan, N.J., last week, Christie said he believes public school districts should get to determine whether to teach creationism in science classes because that’s a decision that should be made “at the [...]

    The Engine Burns Blue

This image shows a cutting-edge solar-electric propulsion thruster in development at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif., that uses xenon ions for propulsion. An earlier version of this solar-electric propulsion engine has been flying on NASA's Dawn mission to the asteroid belt. This engine is being considered as part of the Asteroid Initiative, a proposal to robotically capture a small near-Earth asteroid and redirect it safely to a stable orbit in the Earth-moon system where astronauts can visit and explore it. This image was taken through a porthole in a vacuum chamber at JPL where the ion engine is being tested. Image credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech
