American Family Association Issues Action Alert Over NBC Pledge of Allegiance

When NBC did not state the words “under God” from the pledge of allegiance portrayed in a patriotic tribute in the US Open golf tournament it was broadcasting, the religious right erupted in indignation. NBC apologized, saying that the patriotic montage it played was not meant to offend.
Yesterday, Rev. Patrick J. Mahoney, Director of the Washington, D.C. based Christian Defense Coalition, declared that the words “under God” were intentionally removed from the pledge, complaining that:
“Sadly, we are seeing an erosion of expressions of faith from the public square. It is critical as a nation we do all that we can to promote freedom of speech and expression. This is includes religious freedom.
“Who ever dreamed that a major American television network would ‘censor’ and remove the mention of God in a public broadcast. Sadly, this shows how the public mention of God is under attack in our nation.”
The American Family Association (AFA) predictably was furious, saying in its “action alert” signed by Tim Wildmon that “NBC clumsily tried to conceal its insult to America’s religious heritage by inserting voice-overs after the words that preceded “under God,” in the vain hope that the American people would not notice. It didn’t work.” AFA’s action alert tells Christians to call NBC’s studios with the following talking points:
- I am furious with NBC for leaving “under God” out of the Pledge not once but twice in Sunday’s coverage of the US Open golf championship.
- NBC’s on-air apology is completely unsatisfactory, because NBC did not admit which part of the Pledge had been removed.
- I am calling to insist on an explanation from NBC for this grossly unpatriotic act.
