Letter: Catholic board chair ‘a beacon of what is wrong with our system…’

To whom it hopefully concerns,

I am writing to you from the emergency ward at Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital, where my son is recovering from an attempted suicide.

Every day he curses that he is gay because of the bullying and abuse he experiences. I am not naïve enough to believe that all of his fellow teenagers are accepting of his orientation. If he could conform to what many believe is “normal”, he surely would.

I’d like to believe that our society is better accepting of sexual orientation and the like, but, it seems that we have a ways to go.

There are many days that I have had to wipe eggs off of our windows and our home while some of the public shows its disapproval for my son. This is truly the ugly (side) of our society. My son is a loving boy and it is extremely sad that he is so often judged by his sexual orientation rather than the wonderful qualities of his character.

Like many citizens of Halton Region, and it seems to be spreading into an international concern, I was appalled by the self-appointed moral authority that Alice Anne LeMay has taken with her publicly-stated beliefs with regards to what the Catholic school board (in this case Halton) needs to practice.

My immediate priority is to get my son out of the hospital and into safety. Once the urgency of this passes, I for one will be delving into what appears to be hateful and despicable beliefs by Alice Anne LeMay — someone entrusted by the public as a leader for the care and betterment of our children — supposedly ALL children.

The comparison of gay groups to Nazi groups is unforgivable. Even her attempt to apologize was a covert reflection of her draconian beliefs.

I strongly urge you to look into this matter of public trust and the danger of her comments and views to children like my son. Once my son is well enough, I am hoping to engage him back into a Catholic secondary school in Oakville. I fear for his safety and well-being with people like Alice Anne LeMay as a trustee of the Halton Catholic school board.

My God, unlike Alice Anne LeMay’s God, loves all children, not just the heterosexual ones. I will watch with interest how our political leaders deal with the issue.

Thank you for your attention to what I, and I believe many, many others, find to be outrageously offensive behaviour by a representative of our educational system.

Alice Anne LeMay is a beacon of what is wrong with our system and our world.  In 2011, one could only wish for more tolerance from our leaders and representatives.

A concerned Oakville parent

    A Supernova Cocoon Breakthrough

Observations with NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory have provided the first X-ray evidence of a supernova shock wave breaking through a cocoon of gas surrounding the star that exploded. This discovery may help astronomers understand why some supernovas are much more powerful than others. On Nov. 3, 2010, a supernova was discovered in the galaxy UGC 5189A, located about 160 million light years away. Using data from the All Sky Automated Survey telescope in Hawaii taken earlier, astronomers determined this supernova exploded in early October 2010 (in Earth's time-frame). This composite image of UGC 5189A shows X-ray data from Chandra in purple and optical data from Hubble Space Telescope in red, green and blue. SN 2010jl is the very bright X-ray source near the top of the galaxy. A team of researchers used Chandra to observe this supernova in December 2010 and again in October 2011. The supernova was one of the most luminous that has ever been detected in X-rays. The results of these observations were published in a paper that appeared in the May 1, 2012 issue of The Astrophysical Journal Letters.
